I travelled in the Kalash Valleys in 1978 and I notice a few differences since then ... the clothing was much less colourful, black, white and red being the only colours used ... the homespun black wool garments looked much coarser then, and the use of cowrie shell and silver chain much more extensive.
I arrived at the same time as the funeral of the Bumboret village chief, and there was a 3 day drinking and dancing ceremony. there were still wooden statues of deities such as Denizu peeping out here and there from the undergrowth.

The grves were above ground coffins, because of the permafrost, and many lids had been ripped open by bears, or had become exposed some other way, so the the bodies, in full costume, were mummies exposed to the sky in various stages of disintegration.

my big moment was seeing a snow-leopard at close range chasing an ibex down a steep slope of the jeeep ride from Chitral ... is it still as hair-raisingly exciting and scary as it used to be? ... it was harder to get to Chitral in those days, the Big Chinese financed highway was still being built ... did you go over the breath-taking mountain pass after Dir?

Interesting... :) Don't you think though that the locals were suspiciously endearing themselves ? And one more thing - isn't it a bit effed up that men are supposed to "kidnap" their wives... Women locked up during their menstruation periods... It don't seem like a nice place to be in :/ Sorry, I have no prejudice, but still, Western culture does have its achievements besides its shortcomings...
